Diana Ashby McBurney-Van-Winkle, 81, of rural Coffeyville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 25, 2023.

She was born on July 6, 1941, in Caney, KS to William “Bill” Knapp and Dorothy Ashby (Norfleet) McBurney.

Diana grew up a proud citizen of Caney, where she graduated from Caney Valley High School in 1959. After high school, she attended Coffeyville Community College and Pittsburg State University, receiving a Bachelors in Education.

On September 2, 1962, Diana was united in marriage with the love of her life Leslie “Les” Howard Van-Winkle at the Presbyterian Church in Caney. Together they built a beautiful home in rural Coffeyville, raising their family. They enjoyed 54 wonderful years of marriage before Les’ passing in 2017.

Diana spent most of her career as a second grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary School until retiring. Previous to that, she spent many years as a homemaker, working alongside Les building homes, with a few years as an elementary teacher in various schools.

Diana was a longtime active member of the Caney United Methodist Church. She was happiest in her life spending time with Les and family. They loved to square dance, antique and travel around the United States, especially in the Branson area. She used her heart and soul to teach and care for others. She was a member of Gamma Rho Sorority and volunteered several years at the Red Cross.

Survivors include one daughter, Lane Gordon and husband Scott of Coffeyville; son, David VanWinkle and wife Michele of Independence; grandchildren, Shanna (Jonathan) Motl, Jesse (Katy) Gordon, Nikki (Jake) Lowrey, Miranda Gordon, Austin (Alison) Gordon, Ryan (Dalice) Redington, and great grandchildren Bennett, Jagger, Jenner, Joel, Leslie, Paxton, Poppy and Rowan. Brother John and his wife Judy McBurney. Sister in-laws, Sally VanWinkle and Chris VanWinkle along with numerous family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one sister Kathryn Laird, brother in-laws Don Laird, Ralph VanWinkle and John VanWinkle and one great grandson, Gordon Motl.

Services will be provided by David W. Barnes Funeral Home at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 4, 2023, at the Caney United Methodist Church, 114 North High St Caney, KS with Pastor Steve Bredesen officiating. Burial will follow at the Robbins Cemetery west of Coffeyville.

Visitation will be on Friday from 9am to 7pm. Family will be present to receive guests from 5-7pm at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville.

The family suggests memorials to Lincoln Elementary School, Caney United Methodist Church or charity of the donor's choice; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
