Indy softball knocks offChanute at Regionals but loses to host and top seed Wamego

After closing out the regular season with a road win over Parsons, the Independence High School softball team headed to Wamego for the East Regional on Tuesday, May 14. The Lady Bulldogs earned the No. 8 seed and drew No. 9 Chanute in Game 1, picking up an 8-5 victory over a familiar Southeast Kansas League foe. Then in the Regional Championship, IHS was shut out by host and No. 1 seed Wamego by the final of 3-0.

Bulldogs baseball falters late, falls to Ottawa in Regionals at Rock Creek

Coming off a tough loss at Parsons to close out the regular season, Independence High School baseball entered postseason play as the No. 8 seed at the Rock Creek Regional on Tuesday, May 14. IHS faced off with No. 9 seed Ottawa in the first round and played well early before giving up a four-run fifth inning en route to a 6-0 loss.

IHS boys’ golf earns fourth straight Regional title at Wellington

■ Small grabs gold once again, all six Bulldogs qualify for State Standout sophomore Ethan Small of the Independence High School boys’ golf team claimed the crown for the sixth time this season and helped lead the Bulldogs to first overall at Regionals in Wellington on Tuesday, May 14. iHS took the top spot with a low score of 314, followed by Circle in second (320), host Wellington in third (324), Winfield in fourth (357), Augusta in fifth (370), Rose Hill in sixth (396), Labette County in seventh (409), Coffeyville in eighth (409) and El Dorado in ninth (424).

County Commission discusses Dearing FD expansion

The Montgomery County Board of Commissioners met for their regular meeting on Monday, May 13. They met to discuss the Department of Corrections walk-in freezer, County Administrator interviews, expanding the Dearing fire station, public transportation and budget discussions for the County Attorney’s Office and the Health Department.

Bulldogs tennis falls just short of four-peat at State

■ IHS earns second overall, Julian/Denney grab gold in doubles Seeking an elusive fourth straight team title, the Independence High School boys’ tennis team traveled to Topeka this past weekend for the KSHSAA Class 4A State Championship. The three-time defending champs gave it their all, but came up just short and had to settle for the silver as a team.
