Large round bales really ramped up their popularity in the 1970s, mostly because of their low labor requirements. Just one or two people can harvest and store these large bales. When you compare that to the crew of two to four able bodies you need for small square bales, there’s quite a labor savings. Adding to that, producers found that these bales naturally shed precipitation and so be stored outside, saving storage costs. Square bales have to be stored away from weathering.

Tales of a Kansas Farm Mom

The dry and hot weather has been good for two things: harvesting wheat and putting hay in the barn. There has been lots of progress in the fields that actually got planted to wheat last fall. My crew helped me finish on Monday and now we are hurrying to plant the double crop soybeans in those same fields. A few fields got some nice rain showers late last week and some totally missed all the rain. We could sure use a nice soaking rain for the corn, soybeans and pastures.

PARTIAL COLLAPSE

Safety and Code Enforcement Director David Cowan said crews from the City of Independence discovered a portion of the roof at 201 E. Main St. had collapsed. Cowan said after a review of the structure and consultation with professionals, a decision was made to barricade off the parking and sidewalks along the north and west side of 201 E.
