to “The Tournament” in
Hutchinson in a couple
of weeks, the Coffeyville
Community College Red
Ravens kept their season
alive on Monday, March
2 with an upset victory
versus Cowley — the No.
1 seed in the KJCCC/Region
VI Tournament and
the No. 15 team in the
nation in the most recent
NJCAA poll. After a slow
start from both sides, CCC
built a double digit lead in
the fi rst half, then held off
a furious comeback attempt
by the Tigers to secure
the 87-83 fi nal.
Freshman point guard
Tylor Perry had a career
night, leading all scorers
with 34 points. Perry
went 5-7 from three-point
range and was nearly perfect
at the free throw line,
going 17-18 at the stripe.
Sophomores Tony Hutson
and Meikkel Murray
chipped in 16 and 10,
respectively, while freshman
forward Larry White
scored nine and grabbed
a team-high 11 rebounds.
Cowley got on the board
fi rst, breaking a scoreless
tie on a layup with 17:38
in the fi rst half. Around
six minutes later, with
the Red Ravens leading
by just two, Coffeyville
went on a 12-2 run to go
up 31-19 with 6:17 before
the break. They then extended
their advantage to
52-32 after back-to-back
three-pointers by Perry
before heading into halftime
ahead 56-34.
Coffeyville upped their
lead to as much as 21
about four minutes into
the second half, but the
Tigers cut the score to 75-
71 with 4:48 remaining.
CCC got the margin back
to 10 with 90 seconds on
the clock and withstood
one fi nal push by Cowley
to hold on for the 87-83
win.
The Ravens (25-8) remained
in Dodge City to
face off with Butler on
Tuesday evening in the
Championship Game,
with the winner automatically
punching their ticket
to the NJCAA National
Tournament in Hutchinson
beginning on Tuesday,
March 17.
