Coming off of home wins last Wednesday,

February 26 over Garden City and Dodge

City, respectively, the Coffeyville Community

College women and men moved on to the

KJCCC/Region VI Quarterfinals in Dodge

City over the weekend. Both squads faced

off with Barton, as the Lady Red Ravens

found themselves down by double digits at

halftime before ultimately losing 78-61 on

Saturday, while the CCC men never trailed

on Sunday afternoon en route to the 92-79

victory.

First up for the women on Saturday, February

29, CCC saw the Lady Cougars open

the contest on a 10-2 run before cutting the

lead to 20-16 at the end of the fi rst quarter.

Barton built its biggest margin of the fi rst

half on a layup shortly before the buzzer to

head into intermission up 42-26.

The Lady Cougars then came out of the

locker room with a couple of quick baskets

to push their cushion to 20 points, but Coffeyville

did not just roll over and give the

game away as they battled back to bring the

score to 57-45 after three complete.

The Ravens pulled to within 10 with 4:36

seconds to play in the fourth, then sophomore

Julia Calafell hit a three to get CCC

under single digits at 62-55 with just over

four minutes remaining. However, Barton

responded with a 16-6 stretch to close out

the game for the 78-61 fi nal.

CCC sophomore Ania Markowska scored

13 points to help lead the way, while Calafell

also chipped in 13 off the bench. Faith

Simpson, the leading scorer on the season

at 18.5 ppg, was limited to seven points and

seven rebounds before fouling out in the

fourth quarter.

Moving on to Sunday’s action on the

men’s side of the bracket, the Ravens once

again used a well-balanced attack to propel

the team to the win. Sophomore Meikkel

Murray tied a game-high with 21 points,

followed by fellow sophomore Tony Hutson

and freshman point guard Tylor Perry with

17 apiece and freshman forward Larry White

with 11. Sophomore big man Kymani Dunham

dropped 13 and hauled in six rebounds

with the second unit, while sophomore forward

Manny Crump scored seven points

and grabbed a team-high seven boards in

the winning effort.

Coffeyville won the tip-off and Perry hit a

three to key a 6-2 start and the Ravens never

looked back. Barton kept within striking

distance until about the fi ve minute mark

of the fi rst half, when CCC scored six unanswered

to take their fi rst double digit lead at

37-27. The two teams went into the break

with the Ravens up 48-33.

Things continued to go Coffeyville’s way

in the second half, as the Ravens took their

largest lead at 6:29 to play with a 76-56 advantage.

Barton had one fi nal run in them

as they pulled to within single digits one

last time, cutting the margin to 82-73 with

2:19 on the clock, but CCC quickly pushed

it back to an 11 point lead and Perry and

Murray combined to go 6-6 at the free throw

line in the fi nal two minutes to ice the 92-79

victory.

The Red Ravens (24-8) returned to action
