Making the trip to Girard on Thursday, September 6, the IHS cross country team had a big day with the boys taking fourth overall and the girls taking the title. As was so often the case in 2017, twin sisters Renee and Leann Trout led the way for the Lady Bulldogs. Now in the their sophomore season, first-year Head Coach Shawn Bloomfield has a reliable pair as a foundation to help build the rest of the squad around. Renee took first place in the girls race with a time of 20:27, nearly a full minute ahead of the runner-up. Leann was not far behind, finishing with a time of 21:45 and earning fourth place. Next up for Independence was senior Jillian Stafford, who placed 12th as she crossed the finish line in 23:24. Fellow senior Dara Mendoza also cracked the top-25, coming in at 24:16 and taking 22nd place. Freshman Emma McCollam just missed out on making it five for five in the top-25, as she finished in 27th place with a time of 24:43. McCollam was just seven seconds back of 25th place. On the boys’ side, Carson Hufferd paced the way with a final time of 18:08. That time was good for sixth place and Hufferd was just six seconds out of fifth. Next up for Indy was Miles Dunham, taking 26th place as he crossed in 20:19. Just five seconds separated Dunham and the top-25. Only nine second behind Miles was Micah Hogge, who took 29th place with a final time of 20:28. The next three runners all came in within one minute of each other, as Blayden Winebrenner took 38th place in 21.04, Aiden Brumley finished 42nd at 21.23 and Marshall Day was 51st with a time of 22:04. Day was just one second away from finishing in the top- 50. Adam Bruce rounded out the leaderboard for IHS, crossing in 22:22 and earning 56th place. The Bulldogs will next travel to Big Hill Lake in Cherryvale for the Parsons Invitational on Thursday, September 13.
