  • IHS ranks high

    A high-quality education is important to most parents and those who have students attending Independence High School can rest assured a high-quality education is just what they will receive. A recent study showed IHS ranked No. 27 within Kansas and No. 3,786 in national rankings.

  • Interest in IHS ag program on the rise
    It may only be the third year of the newest agriculture program at Independence High School but with all the excitement and involvement there has been, it's like the program has always been in place. Ag instructor MaKayla LaRue said the program is in it's third year as two years ago it began as a part-time program with three classes in the afternoon and the beginning of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter.
  • Jefferson School awards assembly packs the house

    Jefferson School held its final school awards assembly Friday afternoon in the school gymnasium where every student in all three grades gathered to receive awards for the year. Carrie Agusto, Jefferson School, counselor emceed the event.

    The Independence Middle School will see several changes when students return after their summer break, according to Superintendent of schools Rusty Arnold. When the monthly school board met Monday at the middle school library he handed out copies of the Independence Middle School schedule and academic policy handbook for the board to review. 

  • Lynn Jenkins hears area college's concerns

    Independence Community College played host to Lynn Jenkins, Kansas US Congresswoman, 2nd district, as she made a quick visit to hear from the area community colleges and their concerns about congressional proposals circulating in congress. "We have an opportunity to work really hard on education issues between now and the end of the year for all of you and I'm here for you to tell me what I need to know so I can serve you (colleges)," said Jenkins. 

  • Fab Lab ICC receives grant to finalize expansion project

    Words like amazing and humbling come to mind for Fab Lab ICC director Jim Correll when asked how he feels about the Fab Lab receiving a grant award from the Federal Economic Development Administration (EDA) for $350,000 to help fund the construction of the Fab Lab expansion building.

  • Jefferson Leaders announced
    Jefferson Leaders were honored for the last time for the 2016 - 2017 school year by the Independence Optimist Club at the Independence Country Club during the Club's regular meeting Tuesday. 
  • IHS AVID students rise to the challenge
    It was Spring 2016 when Independence High School Principal Mario Sherrell approached Julie Dunham, IHS Social Studies instructor, about a new program called AVID. "AVID stands for Advanced Via Individual Determination. I had only heard of the initiative, but had no working knowledge of what it consisted of," said Dunham. 
  • Comedy and drama lead the way in Forensics Showcase 2017
    Drama and comedy, along with silent auction excitement, filled the air of the Independence High School cafeteria Tuesday evening for the Forensics Showcase 2017. Members of the IHS Forensics and Debate team showcased their talents for family and friends, and received their newest chapter degrees.
  • We're not in Kansas anymore … ICC Upward Bound seniors take trip of a lifetime
    Valon Jones, ICC Upward Bound project director, and Gayle Chapman, ICC Upward Bound program specialist, recently took on the exciting task of taking 12 area high school seniors on the trip of a lifetime to beautiful, sunny — and a little rainy — Puerto Rico.
