A two-vehicle accident Monday afternoon brought traffic to a near-stop as Montgomery County Sheriffs deputies and Independence emergency crews were dispatched to US Highway 160 near CR 4315.

Deputies reported a 1993 Chevrolet Pickup struck a 2004 GMC Pickup. The GMC, driven by Richard Fultz, of Cherryvale, was traveling westbound on US Highway 160 when a third vehicle pulled in front of him onto the highway from CR 4315, traveling east on Highway 160. Fultz immediately slammed on his brakes to avoid striking the vehicle which pulled out onto the highway.

The Chevrolet, driven by Lacey Helkenberg, of Havana, was following Fultz's vehicle and was unable to stop in time, therefore striking the rear of the GMC. Helkenberg was transported by Independence EMS to Independence Healthcare Center. The extent of her injuries were unknown as of press time. Fultz was not injured.
