A petition urging President Trump to name the current Kansas Secretary of State the next secretary of homeland security has circulated on Whitehouse.gov

The petition has gathered thousands of signatures since its release four days ago, and names Kobach as the most qualified person to "address the ongoing border crisis" with Mexico and "carry out the Trump Administration's immigration agenda."

The petition was created on Monday and as of Tuesday evening had gathered over 7,000 signatures. The petition would need to have attained 100,000 by its deadline of Dec. 26 to force a response from the White House.

Kris Kobach recently lost the race for Kansas Governor against his Democratic opponent Senator Laura Kelly. Kobach has not announced any future plans, career or otherwise. The petition advocates for Kobach to be considered after his term as secretary of state ends in January.

Trump has previously considered Kobach for a position in homeland security, and said in an October MAGA rally held in Topeka he badly wanted Kobach in D.C.

"I hated that he ran because I would have loved to have brought him into my administration. In fact, if he loses, I’ll bring him into my administration. I hope he loses, because I want him so badly.” said the president.

In 2017 Kobach announced he was offered two positions in the president's administration but turned them both down, and was running for governor instead. But according to the Kansas City Star, President Trump has since "soured" on Kobach due to his loss in the bid for governor.

The Washington Post reported on Nov. 12 that Trump could replace current Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen soon, with speculation on Kobach as the potential successor.
