" Whoever said money can't buy happiness... never went to a yard sale. "

Not all who wonder are lost, some are just looking for garage sales.

Sept. 11 and 12, sale-seekers can travel from Independence to Dearing, Cherryvale, Coffeyville, Caney and Tyro in Kansas and to Copan, Dewey, Bartlesville, Lenapah and Delaware in Oklahoma to find the best treasures during the 13th annual Kan-Okla 100 Mile Highway Sale.

This beloved sale offers more than 100 miles of yard and garage sales and flea markets which offer everything from antique items to unique, one-of-a-kind treasures along U.S. Highways 75, 169 and 166 in Kansas and 75, 169 and 60 in Oklahoma. There are over 30 antique stores along the sale route, along with many city-wide and individual sales. Treasures include furniture - antique and modern, children and adult clothing, saddles, western decor, hats, cowboy boots, primitives, baby furniture, home goods, vintage sings, repurposed furniture, glassware, doors, windows, collectibles and much more.

A few tips and helpful hints offered by the sale's website, kanoklahighwaysale.com, include:

  • Drive carefully and watch out for pedestrians and be respectful of locals
  • Visit the Large Group Sites where one may find 40+ vendors who will be grouped together and typically offer two or more food vendors, restrooms and off-road parking
  • Don't be in such a hurry that you miss out on the fun. Be sure to slow down and enjoy the sale
  • Don't worry about the weather as it rains somewhere along the route each year but is not as bad as some people think it will be. Bring an umbrella or a rain coat and enjoy because no Kan-Okla 100 Mile Highway Sale has ever been canceled

Flyers which include a map of the sale route will be available around Independence at: Eggbert's, Jump Start, Casey's General Store, Ane Mae's Coffee & Sandwich Shop, Mikie's Convenient Store, Independence Chamber of Commerce, Fleas An Tiques, Hager's Market, Independence Daily Reporter and the City of Independence. Group locations include Dewey Group Site at 1069 Washington Blvd., and CVAPA, three and a half miles north of Caney.

The Independence Public Library, 220 E. Maple, will be taking part in the sale, as well. In a press release Thursday afternoon, IPL announced that from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 11 and 12, treasure-seekers can visit the front of the library and check out their bargains, as well as sign up for their ever-popular Open Access account; photo identification is required. Items available for sale at the library include, meeting room tables and chairs, electronics, children's department items and lots of books. "Out of consideration of our staff, volunteers and other bargain hunters, we ask that you please wear a mask and maintain proper social distancing," said the release.

Take your time and find those special little sales not heavily advertised, too. Lots of individuals will be having sales.
