    The Montgomery County commissioners heard some discouraging words Monday during their regular meeting when Diane Carter from the Property Evaluation Division (PED) with the state of Kansas, who is the court appointed county appraiser as the position in the county has yet to be filled, informed the commission she has been looking at some of the issues in the county from the 2016 compliance records and the county has failed to make compliance points.

"During the cold months, we spend more time indoors and use different methods to heat our homes. It's important to keep fire safety in mind when you are heating your home," said Wallis.

    Kansans have been dreaming of a white Christmas for a long time; the once snowy, frigid winters being slowly replaced with much milder temperatures. This year, Christmas will feel more like the days of yore with high temperatures estimated to be in the mid to low 40s and the low the night of Christmas Eve swooping down into the teens to ensure a frigid Christmas morning. 
  • County hears concerns at jail

    Montgomery County commissioners were greeted by Brian Leedy, jail administrator, along with members of Public Works and the Sheriff's Office to request work be started immediately on extending the staircase railing in the jail. "What we need to do is extend the rails along the staircase that go to the balcony. We have had several issues in the past of inmates attempting to jump over the railing with a sheet tied around their neck," said Leedy. 

  • Ordinances updated on city codes

    For the first time in 20 years, the city of Independence has updated the city code by adopting 11 ordinances - one of which amended and supplemented Appendix D of the city code, regarding building permit fees. Commissioners and fire chief Shawn Wallis had the honor of presenting two more Lifesaver Awards to two of the city's first responders. They approved an alternative design for a new Park and Zoo sign and approved a settlement agreement on ongoing litigation.
