  • Two vehicle accident caused by third vehicle
    A two-vehicle accident Monday afternoon brought traffic to a near-stop as Montgomery County Sheriffs deputies and Independence emergency crews were dispatched to US Highway 160 near CR 4315. 
  • State highway patrol conducting sobriety checkpoint
    People planning on going out this weekend around Pittsburg should keep an eye out for a Kansas Highway Patrol checkpoint.
  • Crops conditions reported, cattle numbers up one percent from last year
    The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) report regarding Kansas crop progress and conditions reveal winter wheat condition rated two percent very poor, seven percent poor, 40 percent fair, 43 percent good and eight percent excellent. The week ending March 10 had 0.9 suitable fieldwork days.
  • Burglaries solved, pizza party held, busy week for IPD
    Independence Police Department Officers Ike Dye and Devin Mendoza were recognized this week by the department for their collaboration to solve what the department referred to as a string of crimes.
  • Celebrating regional manufacturing around Indy
    Thursday nearly 70 people gathered at the Masonic Lodge in Independence to celebrate regional manufacturing by featured speakers from Spears Manufacturing in Caney, John Deere Coffeyville Works and Cobalt Boats in Neodesha. Montgomery County Action Council Executive Director Trisha Purdon served as the luncheon emcee.
  • IPD advisory committee announces 2019 members
    Attending their first Police Chief Advisory Committee meeting Wednesday were the newest members who were introduced to current members and updated on department business.
  • Fire engulfs unoccupied house Sunday evening
    The first shift of firefighters with the Independence Fire Department were called out Sunday evening about 7:13 p.m. to 517 W. Chestnut St., where the first floor of an unoccupied house was full involved with fire.
