    From dawn to dusk, Independence was alive with action and fun Saturday. Events happening over the weekend included the Montgomery County 4-H Fair, Independence Main Street's annual Summer Sidewalk Sale, Farmers Market, Stuff the Bus fundraiser, Helmets and Heels, the 22nd annual Don Harris Memorial Golf Scramble and free Downtown Movie Night.

    TOPEKA — The 2018 Kansas Crime Index Report was recently released by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. It compiles crime statistics reported to the KBI by state and local law enforcement agencies from all across Kansas.

    After decades of going through the process of becoming an American, Hedwig Helga Bray formally joined the nation, raising her right hand and taking the Oath of Allegiance to become a U.S. citizen Thursday.
  • A crowd gathers to honor Remington in his retirement
    It was very warm last Saturday night when the lone fire truck came blaring its siren up Myrtle street toward the VFW club. Once it reached the front of the club the door was opened to let out a very important dignitary of Independence. Remington, the Independence Firedog and the winningest Flushing dog in the history of the sport emerged to greet the huge crowd who had assembled to wish him a happy retirement and birthday.
