Children face many hardships, having the correct school supplies should not be one of them. To help alleviate the worries of gathering school supplies is the Independence community Stuff the Bus school supply drive which runs through Aug. 26.

Organizer Jim Kelly said this is the 13th year the Independence community will be uniting to donate school supplies for area USD 446 students. "Again, this year we will be gathering donations to fulfill the school supply list of our students needing assistance to begin the 2019-2020 school year," he said, noting during the first 12 years of Stuff the Bus, each year approximately 200 students have been able to obtain, at no cost to their family, the basic school supplies needed to start the new school year.

Kelly said donations may be actual school supplies which can be identified on the USD 446 school supply list of miscellaneous items which may be needed throughout the school year or a monetary donation of any amount to purchase the necessary school supply items. A $55 donation will supply a student with a prepackaged kit which contains all of the basic school supply items. Kelly said all donations will be delivered to USD 446 who will be in charge of distribution.

The program is sponsored by Community National Bank & Trust, St. John Health System-Independence and the Independence Rotary Club, with the assistance of USD 446 administration.

“Stuff the Bus is an opportunity to celebrate the community of Independence and the families and students who make it a great place to live,” said Kelly, of Community National Bank & Trust. “The sponsors are proud to be a part of a program we hope will continue to assist deserving families and children. We realize the difference we can make in a child’s life by getting them started off to a great school year with the tools they need to learn.”
