To learn more about what is happening around Independence, join the Independence Chamber of Commerce and the City of Independence for the Feb. 1 edition of First Friday. The monthly event will be held in the Civic Center, 410 N. Penn Ave., beginning with a light breakfast provided by the February sponsor — Coffeyville Regional Medical Center (CRMC) at 7:30 a.m. First Friday concludes at 9 a.m.

Chamber President Lisa Wilson said the First Friday event is "an informational forum featuring leaders from local businesses, industries, government and civic organizations who share relevant, timely updates on Independence events and issues." The public is always welcome at these free events.

CRMC encourages all women to wear red to the February First Friday and join them having a photograph taken on the steps of Memorial Hall to raise awareness of women's heart health.

Wilson said the February event will focus on a wide range of subjects important to the community. A presentation on the Independence High School AVID Program will be offered by Julie Durham. Jon Atlas will update the community on the Washington Historic Residences. Independence Public Library Development Coordinator Brandon West will inform attendees of library programs. Lastly, Rusty Baker will talk about the Bird Hunters United National Finals which occurred in January and the National Upland Classic Series in February offering insight into the number of people and tourism the events bring to town.
