Back to school time means it’s all about kids time, and kiddos, it’s all about you and your health at the annual “All About Kids” fair which will be Saturday, Sept. 8 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Jefferson School, 2101 N. 13th St. A variety of agency booths and activities promoting the well-being and growth of children will keep you and your family busy as well as drawings, giveaways and exhibits.

The KAY Clubs will be offering breakfast and lunch at a minimal charge as a way to fundraise for their events and activities.

Several screenings will be available at the fair and parents are encouraged to take advantage of them. Screenings include: the Independence Lions Club will provide, free of charge, Sure Sight vision screenings which help detect subnormal vision or risk factors which may threaten visual development; The Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas (CHC SEK) will provide dental screenings and fluoride treatments free of charge for any child; health screenings measuring height and body mass index (BMI) will be provided free of charge for any child attending the fair by Independence Family Medicine/Wilson Medical Center; and sports physicals will be available for students, if a child has insurance bring the card so it may be billed by CHC SEK, no co-pays, deductibles or out-of-pocket expenses will be charged.

Independence Public Library Children’s Librarian Charlene Mitchell will offer Special Children’s Storytelling which is sponsored by Families - THE Foundation. Those attending a storytelling session will receive a coupon redeemable for a free book at the Independence Children’s Library in IPL, 220 E. Maple St.

A variety of activities will be available to entertain children throughout the morning event including, Independence Police, Fire and EMT equipment available for viewing, and a roll-over vehicle and Jaws of Live demonstration given by the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Montgomery County Rural Fire Department.

The kids fair is through the Montgomery County Coalition for Families, Children and Communities and all parents, caregivers, professionals and more, are urged to participate. Attendees learn more about the many services and opportunities available for children within the community.
