The Independence Pirates have a new football coach and his name is Jason Brown. Brown comes to ICC by way of Garden City and from California. He served as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at Garden City from 2014-15 and before that was the head coach at Long Beach Cabrillo High School in California from 2011-14.

In his time at Long Beach Cabillo, Brown took a team that had won just three of their first 60 games to the playoffs in just one year. It was a young program that he had to build very much from the ground up and he expects to build the ICC program up in very much the same way.

"I've been in so many places that were kind of in a downfall, so to speak, and I've kind of turned them around, had the luxury of turning them around, and hiring the right staff," he said. "My motto's always been 'it ain't about me, it's about us' as far as the staff goes, so the better the staff, the better I (can be).

"The record's on my name, but to be honest, the program thrives or falters on the staff, so I've hired two great men so far and we've got a long way to go."

As soon as Brown was hired he made a quick hire of Jason Martin.Martin was the secondary coach for Garden City last season, a team that took down the then No. 1 ranked team in the nation in Butler and had the national defensive player of the year on it. Brown also retained one more ICC coach from last season's team.

Brown spent time as a player in the NFL as well and as a coach has sent 18 players into the NFL ranks including young men the like's of Akeem Ayers, Orlando Scandrick and Richard Seymour. He played for the Kansas City Chiefs in the early 2000s before going on to coach as a graduate assistant and eventually as a head coach at Compton Community College in California.

This will be the start of yet another year coaching in junior college which has been where Brown has really found his passion to be. He has spent more than a decade in the junior college and is anxious to getting back into a head coaching role with the Pirates.

"It will be interesting," Brown said. "So I'm excited, and we'll see how it goes and hopefully we can adapt to the community and get this thing going."
