Those living in Kansas know of the beauty, attractions and events which happen all across the state but those of us living in Southeast Kansas know where the true beauty lies — right here. Only In Your State, a website offering highlights of each of the 50 United States, recently published, "25 Positively Awesome Attractions in Kansas That Belong On Your 2019 Bucket List" for those who like to make annual bucket lists and cross items off their list.

The list included several places a Kansan would expect such as No. 3 on the list, Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum in Atchison, No. 9-the Oz Museum in Wamego, and the Old Cowtown Museum in Wichita. Others are not so known, like No. 20, The Santa Fe Trail wagon ruts near Dodge City and No. 19-the world's largest hand-painted Czech egg in Wilson.

Proudly representing Southeast Kansas at No. 6 is the Elk Falls Iron Bridge, waterfall and Outhouse Decorating Contest. The article stated, "Yes, you read that correctly. Not only is there an iron bridge and a beautiful waterfall, but they hold an annual outhouse decoration competition every fall."

If you have never been to Elk Falls to see the bridge or waterfalls, go … you will not be disappointed. As onlyinyourstate.com says of the falls, "Relaxing next to the falls in Elk Falls is something every Kansan should try out sometime." The site states the waterfall isn't tall or flashy but the rushing waters are beautiful no matter how much of them you see. "The quiet town means it's easy to avoid people during your visit if you are looking for a quiet getaway," the writer said.

The writer describes the Iron Bridge as "a beautiful piece of history that might not support cars anymore but is still a sight to be seen by anyone on foot." Elk Falls is also known as a ghost town and the website states "Though it might have under 100 people living here, you won't find any shortage of character." Elk Falls calls themselves the "Largest Living Ghost Town in America" and although they are a ghost town, you will hear from local that they are "not quite dead yet."
