The air crackled with excitement around Independence Wednesday evening as the annual Fireworks Spectacular got underway at Riverside Park. Children and adults alike had sparkles in their eyes as they listened to the Mid-Continent Band play their special Independence Day selections kicking off the spectacular evening.

Many enjoyed partaking in some of their own firework displays inside the Oval while others visited, played at the park, ate lots of food, rode the carousel and train, and just enjoyed the glorious evening.

While the park train did break down, it didn't stop the kiddos from having fun in the rest of the park as the carousel went round and round for most of the evening.

Although there was one moment of fright when a person's hand was injured by fireworks, (see related story) Independence Police Chief Jerry Harrison said, "Almost nothing else happened all day and night so it sounds like an exceptional fourth."
