Monday morning the Independence fire department received an alarm of a fire on the second floor of the Independence Corporate Offices building in the south side elevator lobby at approximately 8:16 a.m. "When we arrived on the scene we noticed a light smoke coming from a trash can that had caught on fire and tenants of the building had extinguished it with a fire extinguisher," said Shawn Wallis, Independence fire chief. There was minimal damage to the building and tenants were allowed to return to work at approximately 10 a.m. The fire is under investigation by the Independence Police department detective division.
