Independence Family Medicine announces new additions to their own family. Mardi Long, APRIN-BC has joined the staff of Johnathan Rodriquez APRNBC at 209 North Sixth Street, Suite 103. Mardi Long is a board certified nurse practitioner who has been a healthcare provider to the Independence community for five years while working for the Mercy heath network. “As an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN), I am certified in family medicine,” said Long. She is certified to provide care for children and women’s wellness, medicare physicals, DOT physicals, acute illnesses, diabetes and hypertension. “I look forward to continuing care with my patients that I have already established and I am accepting new patients,” added Long. “I am looking to move into the new building in May or June. Currently, I am sharing office space with Johnathan and I work on Monday and Tuesday and every other Friday. The office will be open longer hours, approximately 10 hours per day to accommodate our patients’ needs until we move to the new location,” said Long. She also calls on nursing homes. “I routinely visit the nursing home and assisted living facilities to help my patients that can’t come into the office,” said Long. Currently, she is calling on Montgomery Place, the Ganzel house and Eagle Estates. She is married to Fred Long of Independence and she has two children and three step-children. When she has time off from work, she likes to work in the yard and work on remodeling their house. “We just remodeled our retirement home. It was our second one in four years. We remodeled what we said was going to be our retirement home, only to find another home that we liked better,” Long said with a laugh. Long attended Pittsburg State University where she received her Master of Science (MSN) in Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Certification. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) at Fort Hays University. “I was born and raised in Independence and I plan on staying here,” said Long. She worked for Mercy for 19 years before becoming a nurse practitioner. Independence Family Medicine will soon have a new home. Wilson Medicine Center of Neodesha has purchased the former Braum’s building located on North Pennsylvania Avenue in Independence. Ac- cording to Dennis Shelby, CEO of Wilson Medical Center, “We have been looking at property for the past six months. The property, the former Braum’s building, was the best that we looked at. The best thing about the property is the parking lot. Patients should have no problem getting into the facility. “After the drawings are complete, we will begin remodeling the interior of the building to meet our specifications and hopefully, we are looking at an opening date of May or June,” said Shelby.
