The Independence school district has announced students of the month for December, due to last month being a "short school month."

Each school submits their potential candidates for student of the month. Those chosen were:

Jefferson School

Melanie Williams — the nine-year-old daughter of Ted Sutherland. She is a 4th grade student and those that submitted her as student of the month stated she is a "model student who leads by example and remains focused at all times." It added that she is a positive influence, kind to everyone, and always helpful to those around her.

Independence Middle School

Nijah White — the 12-year-old daughter of Amber Morse and is the sister to Raevaughn and Ranann White. She is a sixth grade student and those that chose her said she always "applies herself at school and demonstrates kindness and compassion, along with being helpful to others."

Independence High School

Zeb Campbell — is the 16-year-old grandson of Russell and Sandra Barker. He is an 11th grade student, and his nomination form described him as "most helpful" in his role as a teachers' assistant. "He never complains about the tasks assigned to him and is reliable, trustworthy, and loves making things more efficient. He is always willing to help others in the classroom."

The district-wide student recognition program, initiated in 2007, honors one student per building from grades Kindergarten through 12th grade each month, September through May.

Monthly recipients will receive a student savings account from Community National Bank, single admission to Independence Cinemas, a single topping medium pizza from Independence Pizza Hut, and a free combo meal from Sonic Drive In (includes entrée, side & drink). In addition, recipients are recognized in a specially-designed advertisement in the Independence Reporter and treated to lunch by their school principals.

The “Student of the Month” program is jointly sponsored by Community National Bank, the Independence Reporter, Independence Cinemas, Independence Pizza Hut, and Sonic Drive-In.
